It is customary to hang ‘clouties’ at fairy wells as an offering to either bring healing or wish fulfillment. As the offering weathers and erodes so healing occurs or wishes materialise. At some fairy wells, chapels were constructed, depicting a Christian presence at otherwise pagan sites.

At Madron Well, near Penzance, Cornwall, there is a chapel with a large ‘alter’ stone at the head of the chapel. Today, Summer Solstice day, offerings were found on this large slab of granite. The offerings included gifts depicted in the following 2 photographs.
